video, 1 min

A singer repeats the unstressed and toneless neutral vowel sound, 'schwa' for as long as she can before she runs out of breath. Her breath measures the duration of a shot of video (a phonographic representation of the 'schwa' sound).

At the centre of the phonetic diagram, schwa, hovers, waiting, refusing to commit to the grain of the nasal fricative or the decision of the plosive stop. It could be a sound of potential, about to burst into something else, an elongated grunt or drunken slur. In this case, its limits are defined by lung capacity.
